Under Article 15 and Article 25 of the Constitution of India, freedom of Religion is fundamental rights. 

India is a secular country and every citizen of India has the right to practice and promote their own religion peacefully, and also has a right to covert his/her religion to adopt any other religion as per his/her belief, provided that there are no elements of fraud, coercion and allurement.  

Hence, any citizen of India can change his /her religion and after changing religion can also change his name accordingly. 

However, after changing the religion and name, he /she should notify in the Government Gazette, and update all legal documents to avoid any kind of future hurdle accordingly, and further should also obtain the Religion Change Certificate.

             


Procedure of obtaining Religion Conversion/change Certificate:


When any person decides to change his/her religion then it should be done legally, so that his /her new religion gets changed in all the governments’ records. The following three steps are required to be followed to change the religion and name: 


Religion change Affidavit:

An Affidavit is a written statement and oath of a person which is sworn to be true, and is a declaration to prove the truthfulness of the statement.

    

    The First step to change religion is the execution of an Affidavit after giving the details like Name, Address, old religion, new religion and new names after conversion, and it must be made on stamp paper and notarized from an authorized Notary Public or Oath Commissioner. 


Religion Change Notice in Newspaper: 

The second step to change religion is the publishing a Public Notice in a widely circulated national or regional newspaper. 


    This publishing is done to inform the public about the changes going on within their community, and allows them to raise objection if this change of religion is negatively affect them and their community. 


All the details like name, age, address and the name of earlier and new religion which you are going to embrace should be given clearly in this advertisement in the Newspaper.  


Religion Change Notification in National Gazette: 


 The third and final step to change religion is the notification in the National Gazette. It is an online record published by the Central Government of India, and it is required for changing the religion and new name in all the government documents, like Aadhar Card, Election Card, and Passport etc.

 

When an application for notification in the national Gazette is filed, then it will be scrutinized by the authorities, and after convincing that the given details are in proper order and true, the Religion change Declaration will be published in the e-Gazette.

How to get Religious Conversion Certificate : 


Conversion to ISLAM 


 The person who wanted to convert into Islam should visit a mosque and take Shahada in the presence of an authorized Qazi and two witnesses.


     After performing the Shahada, the said authorized Qazi will issue a Conversion /Shahada Certificate in the name of that person who has converted to Islam. 

 

 Conversion to CHRISTIANITY


 The person who wanted to convert into Christian should visit a Church, and after performing the required religious formalities, a Baptism will be issued with a new Christian name and a Conversion Certificate.

 

Conversion to HINDUISM 


 The person who wanted to convert into Hinduism should visit Arya Samaj temple, and the authorized Priest, and after performing the required religious formalities, the temple will issue a Conversion Certificate.
